Receiving workflows
PayIn vs Coinbase Business
Receive USDC in your own wallet, or use a custodial business account with offramps and accounting tools.
Keep USDC in your wallet.
You want direct-wallet USDC receipts and can manage refunds, reconciliation and cash-out.
Use a business account.
Your business qualifies and needs custody, invoicing, bank offramps or accounting integrations.
What changes in practice
| Decision | PayIn | Coinbase Business |
|---|---|---|
| Funds arrive | Your chosen receiving wallet; no PayIn merchant balance. | Your Coinbase Business account. |
| Getting started | Create a QR or link without a merchant account; protect its private management URL. | Apply for a Coinbase Business account and meet its entity and verification requirements. |
| Payment entry | A counter QR or reusable payment link; optional developer integration. | Dashboard payment links and invoices; single-use API checkouts. |
| Order workflow | Shared links require matching; custom fulfillment requires an integration. | Checkout IDs, terminal payment status, webhooks and polling support an integrated workflow. |
| Refunds | A separate transfer arranged with the customer. | Checkout APIs document full and partial refunds. |
| Bank access | Arrange your own conversion and bank cash-out. | Bank offramps are part of the Business platform, subject to eligibility. |
Replacing Coinbase Commerce?
Coinbase’s published transition deadline for Commerce was March 31, 2026. Its transition guidance describes Coinbase Business as custodial and currently identifies US and Singapore legal entities as eligible to apply. Recheck that guidance before deciding: regional availability can change.
This guide compares the current Business product, not the old Commerce flow. Check migration status with Coinbase. PayIn does not migrate your history, balances or integrations.

Business account or wallet?
Coinbase Business combines custody, offramps and accounting tools. Receipts stay in the Business account rather than a wallet you control.
PayIn focuses on receiving USDC on Base, Polygon or Solana at the address you set. Wallet security and recovery remain your responsibility. It does not provide a bank payout, a business banking account or a complete accounting system. Lack of an account creation step is not a promise of unrestricted availability or exemption from applicable requirements.

Links and order checkouts
Coinbase’s current Checkout APIs create single-use checkouts credited to a Business account. Developers store the checkout ID and use a successful webhook or completed status before fulfillment. The APIs also document refunds. Dashboard payment links and invoices offer a separate starting point.
A PayIn shared link can accept repeated payments. Review each merchant record and match it to the sale. If you automate delivery, connect your business system, preserve the order association and verify the result. A configured completion callback does not remove the need for reconciliation and safe handling of duplicate or missed events.

The full operating cost
Choose Coinbase Business when its account services and checkout tooling match your business needs and eligibility. Consider PayIn when a simpler direct-wallet receiving flow is the priority and your business already has a process for managing USDC.
Check current account terms and fees directly. Wallet confirmation, an application success screen, account credit and money available at a bank are different milestones. PayIn’s published approximately two-second test observation concerns wallet confirmation to its success screen; it is not a Coinbase settlement comparison or a guaranteed service level.
